This month, thousands of
people around the country will join together to celebrate
National Preservation Month. Sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the celebration's theme is "This Place Matters,"
an appropriate way to think about not only how much our hometowns mean
to us, but also how their history--and their structures--have impacted
our own lives. Think about it for a minute...can you imagine Ottumwa's
downtown without the Wapello County Courthouse or City Hall...without
the First National Bank building or--our own personal favorite--the
library? All of these buildings are on the National Register's list of
historic places. Now on display in the library's lobby--books that
feature Ottumwa's history, its people and its buildings. Celebrate the
unique architectural heritage that is Ottumwa...because this place
truly does matter.
