Southern Prairie AEA 15 was one of fifteen Area Education Agencies created by the legislature in 1974 and began operation on July 1, 1975. AEA 15 replaced county superintendents in Appanoose, Davis, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Van Buren, Wapello, and Wayne counties.
